AGV Drive Units for Cold Storage, Cleanrooms and Outdoor Use
Key takeaways
- The environment limit of a drive unit is set by its weakest component. Check the motor, gearbox, wheel tread, brake, encoder, cables and lifting unit separately, not only the headline rating.
- Cold storage: tread hardening, thicker grease, battery charging limits and above all condensation when the vehicle moves between freezer and warm dock.
- Cleanrooms and electronics: antistatic or conductive treads, low particle shedding, enclosed lubrication, and electric rather than hydraulic lifting.
- Outdoor and washdown: IP65 or better at every component, sealed connectors, UV-resistant treads, larger wheels and lower adhesion on wet surfaces.
- The IP code describes protection against solids and water under test conditions; it says nothing about temperature, condensation, chemicals or UV.
1. Read the IP code correctly
The IP code (IEC 60529) has two digits. The first is protection against solids: 5 means dust-protected, 6 dust-tight. The second is protection against water: 4 is splashing water, 5 water jets, 6 powerful water jets, 7 temporary immersion. IP54 therefore suits a dry indoor floor with some dust and splashes; IP65 is dust-tight and resists water jets.
Two pitfalls: the rating applies to the tested enclosure in its specified mounting position, often excluding the shaft exit or open connectors, and it does not cover pressure washing with hot water or detergents. For washdown areas, ask for the specific rating and test (for example IPX9K) rather than assuming IP65 is enough.
2. Every component has its own limits
A drive unit combines parts with different ratings. As an illustration from JY Robot's own datasheets:
| Component | Published rating |
|---|---|
| 48 V DC servo motor | IP55 (excluding shaft extension), insulation class F, −25 °C to +50 °C ambient |
| Inline planetary gearbox | IP65, −10 °C to +90 °C |
| 160 × 40 mm polyurethane drive wheel | JPM009 PU, Shore A 75 ± 3, −25 °C to +70 °C |
| 5.5-inch integrated servo hub motor | IP65 |
| 2-ton ball screw lifting mechanism | IP54 |
Combined in one vehicle, the motor would limit the maximum ambient temperature and the gearbox the minimum, unless a low-temperature lubricant is specified. This is why the environment should be part of the inquiry, not a question after the drive has been chosen.
3. Cold storage and freezer applications
- Treads harden. Polyurethane becomes harder and less elastic at low temperature, reducing grip and damping and raising the risk of cracking under shock. Use a compound rated for the temperature.
- Grease thickens. Gearbox and bearing lubricants become viscous, raising breakaway and no-load torque at start-up. Specify low-temperature lubricants and check the starting torque, not only the running torque.
- Batteries. Lithium batteries lose capacity in the cold and most must not be charged below about 0 °C without heating. Plan where and how the vehicle charges.
- Condensation is the real enemy. A cold vehicle that drives to a warm dock collects condensation inside motors, encoders and connectors, which can then freeze when it returns. Sealed connectors, breathers or heaters and limited dwell time at the dock help.
- Floors in cold stores are often icy or wet near doors, so plan traction with a lower adhesion coefficient.
4. Cleanrooms, electronics and battery production
- Static. Use antistatic or conductive treads where discharge could damage parts. JY Robot's STO integrated servo wheel is supplied with antistatic polyurethane wheels.
- Particles. Tread wear, brake dust and grease are particle sources. Harder, non-marking treads, enclosed gearboxes and sealed brakes reduce them.
- Lifting. Electric ball screw lifting avoids the leakage risk of hydraulics, which is why it is usually preferred in clean areas; see ball screw vs trapezoidal vs hydraulic lifting.
- Noise and vibration often matter too; softer treads and low-backlash gearboxes help.
5. Outdoor, semi-outdoor and washdown
- Protection of IP65 or better for motors, gearboxes, encoders and connectors, with cable glands and connectors rated to the same level.
- Treads resistant to UV, ozone and temperature cycling; larger wheel diameters for joints, kerbs and rough surfaces.
- Traction on wet, dusty or sloped ground is lower, and ramps are more common, so recalculate tractive force and adhesion with realistic values; see our tractive force guide.
- Corrosion. Coatings, stainless fasteners and drainage paths matter where water stands or salt is used.
6. Specification checklist
| Item | What to state in the inquiry |
|---|---|
| Ambient temperature | Minimum and maximum, and how fast the vehicle moves between zones |
| Humidity and condensation | Relative humidity, freezer-to-dock transitions, standing water |
| Dust and particles | Type of dust; cleanroom class if applicable |
| Water exposure | Splashes, jets, washdown pressure and temperature, detergents |
| Static control | Antistatic or conductive tread requirement, floor resistance |
| Floor | Material, joints, ramps, wet or icy areas |
| Chemicals and UV | Oils, cleaning agents, sunlight exposure |
| Duty | Hours per day, time spent in each zone, charging location |
FAQ
What IP rating does an AGV drive wheel need?
For dry indoor floors, IP54 is common; for washdown, outdoor or very dusty areas, IP65 or better at every component, including connectors. State the actual exposure rather than a single IP number, because the weakest component sets the real protection.
Can standard AGV drives work in a −25 °C freezer?
Some components are rated for it, but the whole unit must be checked: tread compound, lubricant, motor, encoder, brake, cables and battery. Condensation during transitions to warm areas is often the deciding issue.
Why use antistatic wheels on an AMR?
To let static charge drain to a conductive floor, protecting electronic parts and avoiding discharges in electronics, battery and cleanroom production.
Is hydraulic lifting acceptable in a cleanroom?
It is possible with careful leakage control, but electric ball screw lifting is usually preferred because it has no hydraulic fluid to leak.
