How to Select an AGV Wheel or Drive Module
An AGV wheel should be selected from the required wheel load, tractive force, wheel diameter, travel speed, chassis layout and control method rather than vehicle payload alone. The same AGV or AMR may use very different drive architectures depending on whether it needs pivot turning, independent steering, omnidirectional motion or a compact integrated wheel motor.
For initial sizing, first determine the actual load carried by each driven wheel and the tractive force required for rolling resistance, acceleration and gradient. See our AGV tractive force and wheel load calculation guide before comparing motor torque or module capacity.
- Drive-steering wheel: combines traction and active steering for independently steered AGV/AMR chassis. See horizontal AGV drive-steering units.
- Differential drive module: uses independently driven wheels to control vehicle direction without a separate steering motor. See AGV differential drive modules.
- Integrated servo wheel or hub motor: reduces external components and wiring where compact packaging is important. See AGV motors and integrated servo hub motors.
- Mecanum and omni drive: supports omnidirectional vehicle motion where lateral movement and tight maneuvering are required. See integrated Mecanum drive modules and integrated omni wheel assemblies.
When requesting selection support, provide vehicle self-weight, payload, number of drive wheels, expected load per driven wheel, target speed, maximum gradient, floor condition, battery voltage, control interface and available installation space.
Choose the Right AGV Drive Architecture
Choose between drive-steering, differential drive, integrated servo wheel, hub motor, Mecanum and omni architectures based on vehicle load, tractive force, speed, installation height and control interface. For heavy-duty pivot-turning AGVs, see our differential drive modules; for independently steered chassis, see horizontal drive-steering units. CAD and engineering selection support are available. For heavy-duty projects, see our differential drive sizing guide before final module selection. For a broader engineering workflow, use our AGV drive wheel selection guide and drive wheel torque & power calculator.
